Digestion & Depression

Digestion & Depression

Babies cry for food every 3 hours for a reason: our body’s secrete digestive enzymes every 3 hour cycle, signalling hunger and in preparation for digesting food. This prompts the release of Serotonin (the hormone that makes you feel satiated after a meal).

When you don’t eat at the time your body is expecting food, the unused Serotonin will store in your brain, thereby creating an imbalance (most antidepressants are referred to as “SSRIs” meaning: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors).

How to manage the balance:
1. Our bodies need 12 hours to digest and recover — stop eating at least 3 hours before you go to sleep. Sleep is also the most therapeutic time for your body. You want to be in “fasting mode” to get the most benefits out of sleep. If you tend to eat sugar late at night, counteract with fuck tons of water before you rest that pretty little head.

2. Start your metabolism with a meal or snack within 30 mins of waking up. The sooner you break your fast the quicker your body will adapt to the routine it’s bound to love

3. Break your fast with coffee, by all means, but for the love of God, eat something at the same time. A handful of almonds and blueberries is perfect. Coffee on an empty stomach will spike your insulin to high hell and back all before you’ve even brushed your teeth.
