DNA & Nutrigenomics
Nutrigenomics is the study of nutrients and the effect they have on your genetics.
Your DNA strands can be extracted, broken down and expanded to reveal a very specific recipe or coding that makes up YOU. We consider three factors in nutrigenomics: what the encoded genes say you should express as (genotype), external and environmental factors that influence your genes and finally how your genes actually express (phenotype). In simple terms - if the recipe only needs two eggs but you add a third, the cake will express differently. You are the external factor in this case. A more biological example is if you are not necessarily genetically prone to being inflamed, however you live a high inflammatory lifestyle and consume a diet high in saturated fats, your body will ultimately express inflammation and the diseases that come with it.
The Human Genome Project has collected and sorted this nutrigenomic-data since 1990, which allows us to predict these DNA “recipes”. Doing a DNA test allows clients to get a better understanding of which biological areas to focus on for a better quality of, as well as longer, life.
The beauty of genetic testing is that while your DNA never changes, research is on-going and intensive, meaning we discover new things about our biological processes everyday. DNA testing is for anyone who may be curious and want to learn more about their bodies, but is strongly suggested for those with chronic issues in their family-history such as cancers, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and mental disorders. There is a lot that can be done preventatively if you are aware of what you are dealing with.
